Teaching Experiences

Fostering Math Confidence

Mathematics is often not considered a “favorite subject” among children in the United States, yet it has always been mine. Over time, this passion evolved into a desire to inspire students to take an interest in the subject as well. I believe that children are the future of this country, and I am committed to playing a role in their academic and personal success. Many students find math intimidating; however, building a strong foundation in mathematics is essential, as it influences countless aspects of daily life. I believe this intimidation can be reduced by implementing diverse teaching and assessment strategies, such as interactive lectures, project-based learning, and group collaboration, that support a variety of learning styles, including visual and kinesthetic. These methods help students, regardless of their natural aptitude for math, gain confidence and achieve mastery.

MonarchTeach Lessons

Below are some secondary math lesson plans I developed and taught as an undergraduate in the ODU MonarchTeach Program.

Granby High School

Completed a 10-week student teaching placement at Granby High, where I taught Algebra 1, Trigonometry, and Algebra 2. This experience strengthened my skills in classroom management, lesson planning, and differentiating instruction for diverse learners.

Academy for Discovery at Lakewood

I helped design and teach a project-based lesson on mean as a balance point to 6th graders. Students created their own zoo animals to apply the concept in a fun, hands-on way. I later presented this lesson at the 2022 Virtual Virginia Council of Mathematics Teachers Conference.

Norview High School

My team and I developed and delivered a virtual lesson for a 9th-grade Algebra I class during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This experience challenged us to find creative, engaging strategies to support student learning and retention in an entirely online environment.

Blair Middle School

I collaborated with a team to design and deliver a geometry review lesson for a 6th-grade honors math class. Despite limited classroom resources, we created an engaging and adaptable lesson that reinforced key geometric relationships. This experience strengthened my ability to adjust to challenging teaching environments while maintaining instructional quality.
